Three terms, one discipline
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), and AI Optimisation (AIO) all describe the same core challenge: making your brand visible in the answers that AI systems generate. The discipline is the same. The vocabulary hasn’t settled yet.
Where each term comes from
GEO emerged from academic research, specifically a 2023 study from Princeton, Georgia Tech, and several other institutions that examined how generative AI systems retrieve and cite information. The term is technically precise and has gained significant traction in marketing and SEO circles.
AEO is the older of the three, originally used to describe optimisation for voice assistants and featured snippets. It’s been repurposed as AI answer engines have become more prominent. Some agencies prefer it because it tends to resonate immediately with clients who haven’t encountered the other terms.
AIO is the broadest and most general. Some use it as a catch-all for any kind of AI-related search optimisation, which makes it useful in conversation but imprecise as a technical label.
Which one to use
It doesn’t matter much in practice. If you’re talking to a technical audience, GEO is increasingly the standard. If you’re explaining the concept to a client or founder who hasn’t encountered any of the terms, AEO tends to land most clearly: “answer engine” is self-explanatory in a way “generative engine” isn’t.
At Izmi we use “AI search visibility” in most client conversations because it describes the outcome, being visible in AI search, rather than naming the process. The vocabulary is secondary to the work.
The terms will settle. The discipline won’t.
This category is young. The terminology will consolidate over the next few years once the market has matured and agencies, platforms, and researchers have converged on shared language. In the meantime, the underlying discipline is real: producing content that AI systems cite, structuring it so they can parse it, and building trust signals they weigh. It doesn’t depend on what you call it.
